the next day i wake up. My upper body will move but there’s something wrong with the legs! I sit around for a bit until Alan and Zoe find me in my room once more, near enough naked. I knew there was a reason I got my own room on this holiday.
I meet them downstairs for breakfast. And there’s a wait for food apparently. So long that for some reason it never comes until it is reasked for. Zoe has this.
Alan has a vegi breakfast, the first vegi meal of the holiday and me.
I have the full Scottish breakfast with local square flat sausage. All fuelled up and the question is what are we going to do today>? Really though we knew what the answer to that was and the question was how are we getting there? I voted for hiring some bikes for the day and this was accepted by all. And on the internet we went to find the nearest hire shop. Can you believe it, they are all closed on Sunday. All closed??? Well that mode of transport was out so we decided to get a taxi.
And headed up the high street
quickly nipped into the Nevis Bakery and
carried on to the railway station where we got a cab. “Can you take us here please?” and Alan pointed at his map. “You want to go to Steall Falls then?” the taxi driver asked. “Well as close as you can get us please”.
And I’ll give you the taxi driver did a grand job of getting us much further down the road than we actually asked. From here on there was no road.
Alan smiles “Zoe we can get rid of him easily here, everyone would think it was an accident.”
“Alan”, I say “this must be one exciting path, look death, living on the edge.”
Well this is it this could be the last photo. But for the world it is unfortunately isn’t.
And off we set on the long walk.
A treacherous walk
through dangerous forests
with wide animals lurking
everywhere. We will have to watch our steps.
Will it really be as described “A lost Valley only found through the single path of a high walled gorge”" nested between the two mountains”
We seem to have gained some height.
the dangerous path contines
And we are weary of where we step.
I think I can see the waterfall from here, look.
and Nack is in his element.
i think this is it. I thinkk this is the lost valley.
now where are those Dinosaurs?
If you think the man eating dinosaurs aren't going to see you like that you have another thing coming.
I say a lot of wise things.
Zoe of course thinks she has the answer. Beautiful eyes mind.
With the falls in sight we complenate if it is safe to proceed into the valley?
And off they go whilst I hang back at a distance. If nothing else the midges will eat them first!
And I trot on behind.
The clouds are coming.
But wow look at that
Look at this place.
We see some activity in the distance and head on over.
The way ahead and to the waterfall is for adventures only.
“You first Nack” Says Zoe
And off he goes.
Now I’m going to be honest and at this point, I was scared. the point where all three wires wobbled out of sync. Yep I was scared, there was how ever no turning back.
I make it, I’ve made it. I’m here alive. Zoe starts her crossing.
She has more balls than I do so she’ll surely be all right.
“what did you say Zoe? There’s no cocking about on that?” And I’m sure you’ll find a Youtube video with her full comments on.
After we crossed we noticed some other people give it a go. But no nobody else crossed. We were alone and Alan stayed behind in case he need to ring the emergence service for us.
and the walk continued to our ultimate destination.
However it is not without its dangers. It quick bog!
Treading carefully Zoe is bewildered how I got over it so quick.
It is like an invisible maze!
We head though the last bit of wood.
And for our reward we have this view.
There’s nothing quiet like a waterfall. Zoe comments its raining but I think its just splash back.
Zoe makes it quite clear she’s not venturing any closer and has done her coat up.
she is right it is raining.
Scared we check if there is another way across the river.
But there is not and
we cross the crazy invisible maze bog.
Past the holiday place you can hire
and back to the rope bridge. I let Zoe go first.
she is one brave girl.
Personally I’m not looking forward to this one bit.
Yes I’d be holding tight too.
And she nearly there.
This is it then, my go!
Wibble wobble. Did neither of us see this sign when we originally crossed.
Thankgod I’m across
Where’s Alan I need a hug from someone sensible.
He’s wildlife spotting. Arn’t me and Zoe wild enough I consider?
And when I say wildlife watching he’s watching the birds.
Here and there by the river side.
We silently watch ourselves
and are joined by others.
And that's it, once there is an audience he is off.
Getting damper we leave the magnificent Steal Falls.
Clouds are forming fast and the rain dropping quickly.
Are they getting a signal in the lost valley of the dinosaurs?
time to leave anyway.
You Yuk Yuk that waterproofing was such a waste of money.
Thanks Blacks and Grainger for wasting my money.
Many steps latter
We are where the taxi dropped us off. But this isn’t where we are getting a taxi. Oh no there’s no signal for some way up the valley.
And so we walk
At first down a single track road.
Still enjoying a the veiws
The rivers flow
the small waterfalls.
And then we head onto a path that follows the road roughly.
we cross a bridge and we take some photos here using one or two of my cameras picture modes.
and then head on.
Its no longer raining,
no its pouring!
Its hard to describe when you can see mile and miles in front of you no shelter and it pouring heavily.
It’s a wetness that wetter than being in the bath.
I might as jump in!
I was not joking!
And off we plod, well they do and if I doubt keep up I’ll be left for dead!
we reach a road and that lifts my spirits.
The pace picks up, the Youth Hostel is “just round the corner”
But this is some corner
and even my camera is getting damp inside!
There is the Ben Nevis, thankgod we didn’t choose to go today.
And like I said its a long corner.
that never ends
I think I’m going to eat it.
We are here, this is it. Life and a telephone box!
and next door a holiday center with a bar.
“so Nack let me get this straight. You want a pint, and a taxi. You don’t want to walk back to Fort William.”
He understood me right, and it was so nice to get in a warm shower and be naked again for when Alan and Zoe came to the door!
We went out, it had dried up somewhat and now looked pleasant.
Due to there being so much rain we played Noah before
finding somewhere for tea.
“All the Dipps Nack!” said Zoe “just for you, and big crisps”
I look at the menu and consider for a moment
i could be back in Birmingham.
the starters come.
And go, and the mains and then would you believe it
bed. This would be the last time I see Zoe and Alan but at that moment I wasn’t sure it would be…..
